There is a particular kind of frustration in hearing the system run while the house stays warm, and in a humid New England July it arrives fast. An A/C not cooling properly is among the most common calls we take in Massachusetts and New Hampshire between late June and early September, and a meaningful share of those calls turn out to be something a homeowner can check in ten minutes.

This guide covers the checks that are safe to do on your own, in the order worth doing them, and it is clear about where the do-it-yourself line sits. Past that point, the work involves sealed refrigerant circuits and energized components, and it needs a licensed technician.
First Steps When Your A/C Is Not Cooling
Start inside, with the thermostat. Settings get bumped by a passing elbow more often than anyone admits, so confirm the system is set to Cool and the fan is on Auto rather than On.
That fan setting causes more confusion than any other. Left on On, the blower runs continuously, including during the stretches when the outdoor compressor has cycled off. What comes out of the registers then is room-temperature air, which feels exactly like a system that has given up even though it is working normally. Switching to Auto lets the fan rest between cooling cycles, which also trims a bit off the electric bill. If you have a smart thermostat, open the app and check the schedule too, since a stray setback or a vacation hold can override the temperature you thought you set.
Inspect the Air Filter for Dust and Debris
A clogged filter is behind a surprising share of weak cooling. Your system has to pull a steady volume of indoor air across the evaporator coil, the indoor coil where refrigerant absorbs heat from the air, and dust, pet dander, and pollen packed into the filter media choke that flow.
Two things follow. The blower motor works harder against the restriction, and efficiency drops. The Department of Energy notes that replacing a dirty, clogged filter with a clean one can lower your air conditioner’s energy consumption by 5% to 15%. 1 In more extreme cases, airflow falls far enough that the evaporator coil freezes into a block of ice, at which point the system moves no air at all. Pull the filter and hold it up to a light. If you cannot see light through it, replace it and give the system an hour before judging the results.
Checking Airflow Dynamics and Outdoor Equipment
If the filter is clean and the house is still warm, airflow is the next place to look. Closing vents in unused rooms is a common energy-saving instinct, and with a modern central system it usually backfires, because the ductwork and blower were balanced around a specific volume of moving air.
Close too many vents and you raise the static pressure inside the ducts, meaning the resistance the blower has to push against. The cooled air that does get through reaches fewer of the rooms you actually use, and the blower motor wears faster for the trouble. Walk the house and open the supply and return vents, then make sure furniture, rugs, and long curtains are not sitting over them. Return vents matter as much as supply vents here, and they are the ones most often blocked by a couch.
Examine the Outdoor Condenser Unit
The outdoor unit, the condenser, dumps the heat your system collected indoors. It needs unobstructed airflow through its coil fins to do that, and a Massachusetts yard supplies plenty of obstructions: cottonwood fluff in June, grass clippings all summer, leaves in September.
Clearance requirements vary by manufacturer, by model, and by which face of the unit is involved, so the installation manual is the authority for your equipment. Carrier’s Infinity 24ANB6 instructions, as one example, call for 6 inches on one side, 12 inches on the remaining sides, 30 inches at the service end, and 48 inches above the unit. 2 Daikin Comfort Technologies’ installation reference for its Goodman-branded residential R-32 condensing units specifies 10 to 20 inches depending on the face, and 60 inches overhead where the top cannot be left open. 3 When shrubs or debris close those gaps in, the unit cannot shed heat, so it runs longer and cools less. Clear the vegetation and yard waste by hand, and skip the pressure washer, which can bend the thin aluminum fins, and bent fins are difficult to straighten.
When to Call a Professional for an A/C Not Cooling
Once the filter, the vents, and the outdoor unit check out, what remains is inside the sealed portions of the system. Your A/C moves heat using refrigerant circulating through a closed loop, and that loop is not something a homeowner can open.
Refrigerant is not consumed the way fuel is, so a system that is low on charge has a leak in the copper lines, a coil, or a fitting. Ice on the refrigerant line outside is one sign, and a faint hiss near the indoor unit is another. Under Clean Air Act Section 608, the EPA prohibits intentionally venting refrigerant during service or disposal and requires technicians who handle it to hold EPA certification. 4 Locating the leak, repairing it, and recharging to the manufacturer’s specified weight is licensed work. A technician can repair the damaged line and verify the charge afterward, which matters, since simply adding refrigerant to a leaking system means doing it again next summer.
Recognizing Electrical and Mechanical Faults
Another common pattern: the indoor blower runs fine but the outdoor unit never starts. A failed capacitor is often responsible. The capacitor stores and releases the surge of energy the compressor motor needs to start turning, and it is a component that heat degrades, so mid-August is when it tends to give out. A tripped safety switch or a failed contactor can produce the same silence.
Diagnosing this correctly means testing energized components, and a capacitor can hold a dangerous charge even after the disconnect is pulled. That is the reason this check belongs to someone with training, a meter, and the right procedure. A licensed technician will test the electrical components safely and assess the compressor’s condition before recommending a repair or a replacement.
Prioritizing Proactive Maintenance and Comfort
Losing cooling in the middle of a New England heat wave is unpleasant, and a methodical approach beats guesswork. Confirm the thermostat is set to Cool and Auto, check and replace the air filter, then clear debris and vegetation away from the outdoor condenser. Those three checks resolve a real share of no-cooling calls, and they take about fifteen minutes together.
Annual maintenance is what keeps the list short in the first place, since a technician catches a weakening capacitor or a slow refrigerant leak while it is still a scheduled repair. If the basic checks do not bring the cold air back, bring in a professional rather than continuing to run a system that may be icing up or straining a compressor.
